Globally renowned radical economist Professor Samir Amin to speak at Ruskin.
Ruskin College is delighted to be hosting Samir Amin for a seminar on Global solutions for global problems or delinking from the global system? Samir Amin, is the Director of the Third World Forum, chair of the World Forum for Alternatives and one of the best-known radical scholars from the Global South.
Ruskin Economics tutor Dr Peter Dwyer said that ‘this is not only an honour for Ruskin but it is a rare opportunity for students and the local community to hear such an influential writer-activist. Questions and issues that he has been raising since the 1950s such as how did a rich economic system allow the majority of the world’s people to remain poor are now seen as commonsense. A long-standing critic of the impact of free market economics on the Global South and what today is commonly called ‘globalisation’ his influence stretches beyond academia and into some of the most exciting movements for democracy around the world’.
