Mark became involved in trade unionism at the age of 18 when he was elected as a NALGO steward for one of the then nationalised electricity companies. He subsequently moved onto one of the water companies and played a key role in union organising and recruitment, which culminated in a successful campaign over pay and conditions.

He was also an activist for 17 years in for the Civil and Public Services’ Association, and later the Public and Commercial Services union, where he was involved with the building of a highly successful and active union branch in Department of Work and Pensions. During this time he also spent time working on equality issues, the learning agenda, and representation of members.

For the last four years, Mark has been working as a TUC tutor working for various Trade Union Education units in the south of England, teaching the full range of courses to trade union reps, safety reps and union learning reps - both for the TUC and TUC affiliated unions.

Mark’s role at Ruskin College will see him working with the Director of the Organising Academy and the Ruskin College Trade Union Programme Co-ordinator to deliver TUC Organising Academy training for union full-time officers and organisers, deliver on the TUC Education Programme, provide curriculum development and accreditation support to the TUC Organising Academy.
